Darrel Gornik

Darrel Andrew Gornik, 74, of Downers Grove, Illinois, passed away on January 3, 2026, in Jacksonville, Florida.

Darrel was born on November 13, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois, to Akfelin and Andrew Gornik. He grew up in Downers Grove and graduated from Downers Grove North High School, where he formed friendships that lasted throughout his life. Known for his strong work ethic, Darrel spent many years in sales for tire companies and putting his practical skills to use as a handyman, helping friends, family, and neighbors with any project at hand.

Darrel enjoyed traveling and experiencing new places with his longtime partner of Cheryl Prindle, especially when shared with those he loved. Darrel had a quiet sense of humor, a kind heart, and a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures of life.

Darrel was preceded in death by his parents, Akfelin and Andrew Gornik; his sister, Mary Hires; his brother-in-law, Don Hires; and his longtime partner, Cheryl Prindle. He is survived by his brother, Louis Gornik; sister-in-law, June Gornik; daughter, Alexandra Gornik; son-in-law, John Herzberg; members of his partner's family, Erin Giese and Jennifer Prindle; his nephew, Andrew Gornik; and Andrew's wife, Jennifer Gornik.

A memorial service will be held on May 16 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Casimir Catholic Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois. A luncheon will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Darrel's memory may be made to Second City Canine Rescue in Palatine, Illinois.
