Edwin James “EJ” McKnight, 78, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on May 7th, 2026, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Born in Amsterdam, New York, on February 20, 1948, to Edwin McKnight and Vivian Boyd McKnight, EJ grew up with a love of learning, sports, and performance - passions that shaped the course of his life after graduating from Wilbur H. Lynch High School in 1966.

EJ attended the University of Cincinnati, where he played football, earned a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in education. He spent more than 30 years as a high school English teacher, finding as much joy in the classroom as he did on the football field as a coach. He poured his heart into every level of the sport, mentoring young athletes with the same dedication he brought to teaching.

In his later years, EJ became a motivational speaker after starting his company, Standing Ovations, sharing his message across the United States and abroad. He also raised and distributed money to help those in need through his nonprofit organization, Together As One. In addition, EJ was a professional magician whose performances brought wonder and laughter to countless audiences.

At his core, EJ was a man devoted to his family and his faith. He was known for his strong will, determination, and unwavering commitment to those he loved. He is survived by his wife, Gail, their six children and their families, which include many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services are in the care of Naugle Funeral Home & Cremation Services, located at 1203 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida 32207.
