Eunice Moore, 96, a resident of Jacksonville for the past 54 years, passed away August 2 at the Hospice House in Vero Beach.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Kenneth Moore, and her infant son Michael Allen Moore. She is survived by her daughter Judy Moore of Vero Beach, Fla., her granddaughter Jennifer Dooley and grandson-in-law Patrick Meaney of Santa Monica, Calif., her older sister Kathy Schweitzer of Defiance, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Moore was born in Custer, Ohio, on Feb. 25, 1922, the fifth of six children of Charles and Verna Fahrer. She grew up in Defiance, Ohio, where her parents owned a restaurant and nightclub. She and the other children often helped out in the restaurant.
She was active in sports and academic clubs in high school and was named homecoming queen. During World War II, she worked in a military dental office in Miami Beach, and later in payroll positions in Ohio. Because of her love of Miami, she and her family moved there permanently in 1950 where she was a housewife, swimming instructor, and Girl Scout leader.
In 1964, her husband's insurance job brought the family to Jacksonville. She and her husband loved to take road trips across the Western U.S. and Canada, go to horse races, and play cards. She played golf in her younger years, but when the family interest turned to tennis, Eunice loved to watch her daughter compete, and even played a little tennis herself. She became an avid fan, watching tennis on television throughout her life.
In her later years, Mrs. Moore enjoyed card clubs with a large circle of friends, and had a sharp mind until the end, working crossword puzzles, watching quiz shows, and reading mystery novels.
She was a vegetarian and kept a strict nutrition regimen. She often told people that she "hadn't had a doughnut in 25 years." She lived independently in her home until she had a stroke in late June.
A service will be held at Naugle Funeral home at 1203 Hendricks Ave. at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday Aug. 7. Burial will be at a later date in Defiance, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Stroke Foundation. www.Americanstroke.org
