James Wilburn Bush passed away unexpectedly on January 9, 2026, just days after his 73rd birthday. He is predeceased by his parents Mr. and Mrs. James M. Bush of Fernandina Beach, FL and his sister, Cornelia Graves. His family is heartbroken, grateful, and forever changed by the life he lived and the love he gave. James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, architect, caretaker, encourager, and friend to all. Above all else, he was a man who loved deeply and faithfully. He was the beloved husband of Linda Kaye (Boyett) Bush, the love of his life and his high school sweetheart. James remained steadfastly by Linda's side for their entire life together, serving as her lifelong partner, protector, and caregiver. His quiet devotion was one of the great testimonies of his life.
James was an accomplished architect and a proud graduate of the University of Florida, a title he wore with unmistakable pride-especially on fall Saturdays. His fierce loyalty to the Florida Gators endured through all kinds of weather. He loved the Tom Petty anthem "I Won't Back Down," a song embraced by the University of Florida and one that perfectly reflected the way James lived his life-with resilience, optimism, and quiet determination. Orange and blue were not just colors to him; they were a way of life.
He was the proud father of four children who loved him dearly: Karen Coleman (Scott), Kevin Bush (Taylor), Katherine Bush, and Kent Bush (Jessie). Nothing brought him more joy than being "Papa Bush" to his grandchildren: Wyatt Coleman (13), Georgia-Grace Coleman (11), William Coleman (10), Booth Bush (6), Bishop Bush (3), and Emileigh Bush (2) and Grand Dog, Norma.
James had a genuine love for people and never met a stranger. He listened more than he spoke, encouraged freely, and showed up faithfully-especially when it mattered most. He faced many health and personal challenges throughout his life, yet remained remarkably optimistic until the very end. Though stubborn (and if you knew him, you know), that stubbornness never stopped him from loving fiercely-or from being deeply loved in return. James never gave up on his dream of returning home to Amelia Island, a place that lived in his heart long before his feet returned there. Today, we take comfort knowing he is finally home-resting with his Savior, reunited with loved ones who went before him, and watching from the best box seats heaven has to offer.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers who became fierce advocates and dear friends in James's final years: Heather Tritt of Guardian & Senior Care Services, Rebekkah Lynn, RN of Amelia's Best Senior Care, and the compassionate staff at Windsor in Jacksonville, Florida. Your care, kindness, and presence meant more than words can express.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Friday, January 23rd at 11AM at Fernandina Beach Memorial Methodist Church, with a reception to follow in Maxwell Hall. All are welcome-James loved his friends and would want nothing more than to see you there. So please join us as we give thanks for his life on this side of heaven.
In James's honor, no black attire is required ; he prefers orange and blue. If you don't have it yet, don't worry-you have time. As we gather, we give thanks to God for the love of Christ that James showed to all, regardless of circumstance. God is still good, and still working, even when we cannot yet see the whole picture. Rooted in faith and love, his life reminds us to remain steadfast and press on with hope.
With love and gratitude, The Bush Family
