Martha, Gray Huffingham, a.k.a.” Mighty Martha”, to her grandchildren, was born on March 12, 1931 in Charlotte, North Carolina to Silas and Lilly Williams. She was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at 95 years of age.
She was reunited with her late husband, Irving Denette Huffingham, who she lovingly called “ Huffy”. Huffy and Mighty Martha shared 67 beautiful years of marriage together. They were both employed in and retired from the Duval County School System. Martha taught first grade and second grade for well over 30 years, many of which she taught at HOGAN elementary school in Jacksonville. She was a faithful member of the first Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. Martha and Huffy also lead the Chinese church at first Baptist for about 15 years.
“Mighty Martha” will best be remembered as a devoted Christian wife , mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life; Andrew, Ashley, Amanda, Alyssa, Rachel, Caleb and Rebekah will all have amazing memories of Mighty Martha! The fun they had in the pool, the popcorn parties and the love they shared together will never be forgotten!
Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years Irving Denette Huffingham, her son-in-law Walter LeCharles Johnston ,her parents, Silas and Lilly Williams as well as many other family members. She is survived by her children, Timothy (Helen) Huffingham and Susan (Huffingham) Johnston, her grandchildren, Andrew, Ashley, Amanda, Alyssa, Rachel, Caleb, Rebekah and their spouses, and her brother, Norman Williams. She was also blessed to know her six great grandchildren.
Even though mighty, Martha was granted 95 glorious years on earth, God has planned to give her so much more time in heaven! Perhaps this little quote from the story of the “Little Shepherd Boy” by the” Grim Brothers” can help us understand what God has prepared for her in eternity.
“ In lower Pomerania there’s a diamond mountain 2 miles high 2 miles deep and 2 miles wide. Every 100 years a little bird will come to this mountain to sharpen its beak. when this mountain is completely worn away, one second of eternity will be up.”
As her husband, Huffy used to often preach “eternity can be taken away when eternity is over and that never ends “we love you Mighty Martha and look forward to spending eternity with you!
The services for Martha Huffingham will take place on September 11 at 10:30 AM at the Jacksonville National Cemetery located on 4083 Lannie Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32218.
