Michael Patrick Volgraf, 64, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2025. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, he leaves behind a legacy of service, laughter, and devotion to family. Born and raised on Tulip Street in Philadelphia, Michael spent his childhood playing outdoors, fishing, and vacationing with family at the Jersey Shore. He was the cherished son of the late Joseph P. and Elva C. Volgraf and grew up alongside siblings Jean Marie Kershaw (Michael), Jerry Volgraf (Joanne), Eileen Ashmore (Andy), and Skip Volgraf.
In 1978, Michael answered the call to serve and joined the U.S. Navy. Over an 18-year career, he rose to the rank of Chief (MSC) and earned multiple commendations and retired honorably in 1996, carrying forward the discipline and camaraderie he found in uniform. In 1980, Michael married his soulmate, Cynthia Volgraf. Their 45‐year partnership was built on unwavering love, mutual respect, and shared adventures. He proudly doted on his daughter Christin Garcia (DJ), sons John Rice (Dallas), Rob Rice (Brandy) and his 4 grandchildren—Landin, Everleigh, Ella, and Ryder.
Michael’s spirit shone brightest when he was fishing the nearest body of water, telling jokes that filled any room with laughter, cooking and grilling—famously serving up his Jamaican jerk chicken and Rice, beans, and chutney, at the shooting range or talking about guns, listening to and sharing music with friends and family. His quick wit and generosity made every gathering richer. Michael’s greatest pride was his family and the traditions he nurtured around food and fun. Michael’s kindness and steadfast dedication touched all who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory lives on in the hearts he warmed and the laughter he inspired.
A graveside service will be held on July 11, 2025, at Jacksonville National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life at his home to honor Michael’s memory will follow immediately afterward, offering friends and loved ones the chance to share stories, laughter, and a final toast to a life well lived.
