Miguel "Mike" Lumbag passed away on January 3, 2023, just days before his 88th birthday, after a long battle with dementia.
Miguel was born on January 12, 1935 in Baguio, Philippines, to father Paulo Dekdek Lumbag and mother Lucia Sakkong Malag who are both predeceased. He grew up in a large family with four sisters and six brothers, and endured the hardships of World War II as a young boy.
Growing up, Miguel enjoyed going to movies and socializing, and was a competitive wrestler and body builder - achieving titles in various Mr. Baguio body building competitions. Miguel was also a standout in the community, serving as the first president of the Easter Youth Club (1958), and altar servant at the Church of the Resurrection in Baguio.
In 1959, Miguel joined the United States Coast Guard and attended basic training in Alameda, California. He was stationed in Boston, Massachusetts where he spent his first nine years of service at sea, serving on board five Coast Guard cutters: MCCULLOCH, YAKUTAT, DUANE and CASCO. In later years, Miguel would continue serving at sea on board Coast Guard cutters SPAR, COWSLIP, MELLON and VIGILANT. He also served at various Coast Guard bases and stations. Miguel received numerous decorations, awards, and recognition before retiring out of Coast Guard Base Honolulu, Hawaii in 1985.
After retiring from the Coast Guard, Miguel settled in Jacksonville, Florida to be close to his brother Johnny Lumbag and his nephew Michael Ruliva, who both retired from the United States Navy. Miguel went on to work for the Duval County School Board, ultimately receiving a second retirement in 2002. In his retired years, Miguel continued his lifetime fitness regimen and enjoyed singing and performing karaoke at the American Legion and local organizations.
Miguel was predeceased by his parents Paulo Dekdek Lumbag and Lucia Sakkong Malag Lumbag; his nine sisters and brothers - Mary Lumbag Villarin, Guillermo Lumbag, Consolation Lumbag Ruliva, Prudencio Lumbag, Diomedes Lumbag, Artemio Lumbag, Carlos Lumbag, Rosa Lumbag, John Lumbag; and his former wife, Theresa Marie Bernard Lumbag.
Miguel is survived by his sister, Angela Lumbag Cayowet; his children - Mary (Lumbag) Ross, Miguel 'Mike' Lumbag, Paul Lumbag and Lucia Lumbag; his Grandchildren - Nicole Ross, Kimberly Ross, Tyler Ross, Marina Lumbag, Gabriel Lumbag, Shiloh Hicks, Miguel Lumbag, Jared Lumbag, Ethan Lumbag; his Great Grandchildren - Andres Pe�a, Kylie Feeney, D'metri Walk, and Phoenix Hicks; and his current wife, June Carolyn (Fitzpatrick) Lumbag and her children Larry Meadows, Michael Meadows, and Mary (Meadows) Willis
