Phyllis Gourley Heinold, age 90, was called home to be with Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, on December 19, 2025. Phyllis was surrounded by her immediate family when she passed. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, George Heinold; her parents; elder brother, Richard Gourley; and grandson Patrick Heinold. Here to cherish her memory are her daughter Michele Heinold (Dale Edgar) of St. Augustine, FL; sons Hank Heinold (Kristin) of Jacksonville, FL; Mark Heinold (Theresa) of Santa Clara, CA, and Craig Heinold (Rachael) of Kingston, WA; granddaughters Paige Heinold and Elise Edgar; grandson Matthew Heinold; younger brother William Gourley (Karen); nephews Scott Gourley and Sean Gourley; and nieces Linda Ratliff and Sheila Brown.
Phyllis was born October 7, 1935, in St. Augustine, Florida to Samuel Tyree Gourley and Juanita Grace Gourley, both from Tennessee. She married George Henry Heinold on November 17, 1956, in St. Augustine, FL at the Ancient City Baptist Church. They met on a date while Phyllis attended Jones Business College in Jacksonville and George was stationed at the US Coast Guard Mayport facility. Phyllis was raised in St. Augustine and graduated with the Class of 1953 from Ketterlinus High School and Jones Business College.
Phyllis loved raising their 4 children in many cities. She enjoyed sewing, pottery classes, playing bridge, and joining the Gardening Club in Clear Lake City, TX and Schenectady, NY. In San Jose, CA, Phyllis enjoyed returning to work as an accountant in the SJ State University Library. There she met Nona Love who became a great friend and began her interest in genealogy research for her and George’s families, which she happily pursued for decades. After retiring, Phyllis and George delighted in touring the nation by RV for 10 years, spending time with grandchildren, visiting friends they met while living in a dozen cities, exploring libraries and seeing relatives who assisted Phyllis with family histories to add to her genealogy research, high school reunions, exploring national parks, a favorite was Grand Tetons, and seeing their 4 kids in all 4 corners of the country. Phyllis and George enjoyed square dancing, complete with costumes. In their later years they settled down in St. Augustine where Phyllis enjoyed the ladies’ luncheons with her high school friends, many had stayed or returned to St. Augustine. Their neighbors in Southwood became dear friends and enriched their lives with laughter and companionship. Phyllis will rest in peace next to George at the Jacksonville National Cemetery in Jacksonville, FL on April 10, 2026.
