Richmond “Richy” Vincent Porter Jr., 58, passed away peacefully on Wednesday January 7th, in his parents’ home. Richy was born on September 10, 1967 in Port Jefferson, NY. He is the third of five children, to Janice and Richmond Porter Sr.
Richy grew up in Virginia Beach, where he played basketball, baseball, and football with his siblings and kids throughout Kempsville. He graduated from Kempsville Highschool in 1985. Shortly thereafter, he moved to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and called Rodanthe his home for the next forty years. Richy quickly became well-known in the community. He was everyone's friend and never knew a stranger.
Richy loved to hear and tell stories and had a knack for doing so. His laugh could reverberate for miles and filled any room. His smile was infectious.
Richy was the beloved father to Austin William Porter and Jobell Christine Porter, the true loves of his life. He also was the favorite uncle of a dozen or so nieces and nephews. He loved to share advice and lessons whether you needed it or not, and those of us lucky to receive it, knew that it always stuck with you. Richy was the epitome of a family man, and was known to be the glue of the Porter family. He loved his family, especially his kids, more than anything.
Richy was a skilled housing construction manager and fisherman. He also had many hobbies – on any given day you could find him dory fishing, coaching his kids’ sports, golfing, traveling including with his parents in the last several years, and playing craps in Las Vegas, where he travelled for many years to watch the drag races with his family. In addition to working on beautiful houses all around the Outer Banks, for years Richy also bartended at the Down Under Restaurant and was a commercial fisherman. He was the friend you could call for anything.
Richy is survived by his parents Janice and Richmond Porter Sr., his dear friend and the mother to his children, Erin Lowdermilk, his two children Jobell Christine Porter and Austin William Porter, his four siblings Charlene Kesten (Richard Kesten), Ernest Porter (Maryanne Porter), Christopher Porter (Randi Porter) and Steven Porter (Melissa Porter), many, many nieces and nephews, and his granddog, Rallo, whom he loved dearly.
He is preceded by his four-legged best friend/companion, Spike, his dear grandparents, Uncles Frankie and Ed Johnson, and many friends that were lost too soon.
Richy will be greatly missed, but will forever live on through all your great stories with him.
I love you Dad.
The family will be announcing plans for multiple celebrations of life at a later date.
