Roger Dale Benner

Roger Dale Benner, age 73, passed away on June 30, 2026, leaving behind a life defined by service, dedication, hard work, and devotion to family and friends.

Roger was born on June 24, 1953, in Flint, Michigan, to Lucille and Howard Benner of Clio, Michigan. He was raised in Clio and graduated from Clio High School, where he developed the strong values and work ethic that guided him throughout his life.

Following high school, Roger began his professional career as a machinist with Shetler and Sons Company, where he was respected for his craftsmanship, reliability, and dedication to his work.

Committed to serving his community, Roger later volunteered with the Clio Fire Department and also served as a police cadet with the Clio Police Department, continuing a lifelong pattern of service to others.

Roger ultimately answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy, where he proudly served for 12 years. During his military career, he traveled extensively throughout the world and served honorably during the Gulf War. His service reflected the discipline, commitment, and quiet strength that remained with him throughout his life.

Outside of work and military service, Roger enjoyed many of life's simple pleasures. In his younger years, he played in softball and bowling leagues, enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, and valued the friendships and memories created through time spent together.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Lucille and Howard Benner; his brother, Howard "Shorty" Benner; his sister, Lucille Jones; and Dennis Jones (brother-in-law).

He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Lazar; his grandchildren, Tarrin Lazar and Sadie (Grayden) Nanasy; his great-grandson, Bodey Nanasy; his brothers, Les Benner (Sandy) and Randy Benner (special friend, Roxanne); along with several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will remember him fondly.

Roger will be remembered as a man who dedicated his life to serving others, whether through his community, his profession, or his country. His legacy of service, resilience, and loyalty will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
