Rudy Fernandez
September 21, 1948 - December 29, 2025
Rudy Fernandez, a renowned artist whose life was defined by curiosity and an unwavering devotion to his craft, passed away on December 29, 2025, at the age of 77.
Born in Trinidad, Colorado, Rudy was one of five children of Rudy and Mary Fernandez. His early years were shaped by frequent moves for his father's work and by a deep pride in his Mexican heritage, instilled by his father. This heritage became a lasting thread in his art, informing themes of identity, place, and cultural memory.
Driven by a lifelong hunger for knowledge, Rudy pursued his education in the arts with distinction. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Colorado Boulder, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and later received his Master of Fine Arts from Washington State University.
Rudy lived a life immersed in art. His work reflected not only his talent but his distinct voice-bold, expressive, and unmistakably his own. Over decades, his art reached audiences through galleries, private collections, and personal connections. Creating was not merely a profession; it was how he engaged with the world.
Beyond his artistic legacy, Rudy was a devoted father and grandfather, affectionately known as Papa Rudy. He treasured time with his family and delighted in sharing his love of art and travel with his grandchildren. He gave his daughters a childhood rich in adventure, imagination, and lasting memories that shaped who they are today.
In his later years, Rudy encountered challenges that brought quieter days and moments of reflection. Even then, his warmth remained. His family is grateful that his grandchildren were able to know him and enjoy his stories, humor, and time together.
Rudy is survived by his daughters, Zobeda and Marisa; his grandchildren, Jasper, Marisol, Mariella, and Mateo; his former wife and longtime friend, Denise; his sister, MaryLou; his beloved niece, Olivia; his lifelong friend, Nick; his extended family, numerous friends, and loyal collectors who will continue to carry his legacy forward.
A memorial celebrating Rudy's life and art will be announced at a later date.
