Thomas “Tommy” James Stephan, born November 20, 1972, in Jacksonville, Florida, passed away at the age of 53 on April 3, 2026.
Tommy was preceded in death by his mother, Linda Carol Nicholson, and his father, George William Stephan Jr. He is survived by his wife, Sharla J. Stephan; his children, Thomas Jr. and Madison; his brothers Stephen (Steve), William (Billy), Scott, and Timothy (Tim); his sister Kimberly (Kim) Bailey; and his sister-in-law Catherine (Cathy) Stephan. He also leaves behind his aunts Debbie Goodwin and Donna Nicholson; his uncle Eric; and his cousins Kara Permuy and Whitney Hannah.
His nieces and nephews—Camden Smallwood, Christopher Delmont and his daughter Madelyn Berry, Nicholson (Gage) Stephan, Kersten (Kersty) Stephan and her wife Sam Kolozy, Nicole Schroder and her husband Chase, Sophia Stephan, Richard Stephan and his wife Brittany and their children Kayden and Liam, and Timothy Stephan—will remember him with love.
Tommy graduated from Terry Parker High School in 1991, earning an occupational certification in Culinary Arts. He spent most of his career in the restaurant and hospitality industry, working for many establishments over the years.
Originally from Jacksonville, Tommy moved to Wichita, Kansas, after meeting his future wife, Sharla. They built a life there with their children and remained in Kansas for many years. After their separation, Tommy returned to Florida, first living in South Florida with a roommate before moving back to Jacksonville in 2023.
During his illness, Tommy lived with his brother Billy, who provided him with a home, clothing, and constant support. Stephen and Billy coordinated Tommy’s care throughout his battle with cancer—Stephen taking him to doctor’s appointments and bringing meals, while Billy worked at night and cared for him day to day. Billy often said Tommy was his best friend, and the two shared countless hours bonding over video games and laughter.
Stephen fondly recalls Tommy’s childhood nickname, “Thumper,” given because he would fall asleep in his crib by bumping and thumping his head until he drifted off. Memories like these reflect the deep love his family held for him.
Despite the challenges of his diagnosis and the pain he endured, Tommy faced his final months with courage and the unwavering support of those who loved him most. His strength, kindness, and sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew him.
Tommy’s family takes comfort in knowing he is now at peace, free from pain, and reunited with those who passed before him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his children, siblings, extended family, and friends.
